Healthy Relationship

Key Ingredients for a Healthy Relationship

Be yourself

Remaining true to who you are is a good sign that you are in a healthy relationship. Changing yourself for someone you love will not last and will only make people you know, like your friends and family, angry.

Honesty

Couples that are honest with each other feel more comfortable talking about certain relationship issues, including problems and concerns. Being afraid to talk to your partner or feeling pressured to talk about your innermost secrets are signs that your relationship is not healthy.

Communication

You don’t need to talk all the time, but you must but you must keep the communication lines open, especially when it comes to issues that are important to you in the relationship. A lack of communication can make you feel isolated or confused with regards to your boyfriend’s or girlfriend’s feelings. Remember that an important part of a good communication is to ask the other person what they think of feel and to listen to them when they have something to say.

Respect

Respect is the key to a healthy relationship. When people respect one another, they support each other and listen to the other person’s concerns. They respect themselves as well and refuse to do things they don’t agree with.

Feeling Safe

If you feel threatened in any way, you are not in a healthy relationship. Feeling safe emotionally and physically is essential. You should feel confident that your boyfriend or girlfriend would not try to hurt your feelings or your body.

Trust

Trust is about being able to rely on someone. It is about knowing that he/she will keep his/her word and tell you the truth. Trust is about feeling that this person will support you, look out for you and has your best interests at heart.

Equality

Equality keeps the relationship safe and fair. Being equal in a relationship means sharing power. For example, not bossing one another. Equality can also be about sharing efforts. If you try contacting your boyfriend or your girlfriend 24/7 but they cannot find time to call you, this may be an indication that the relationship is one-sided.

Support and Listening

Does she come to your baseball games? Does he ask how your Math test went? Does she listen to you when you are stressed out about something and need to talk about it? These are signs of support, and it is an important quality in a healthy relationship. Support is about feeling cared for and respected.
